Calling all undergrad scientists!
The Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning (OVPTL) is excited to share that the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) has recently announced a new competition for science education grants to colleges and universities.
The call is now open for pre-proposals for their Inclusive Excellences: Undergrad Science Education Grants.
The goal of the initiative is to help institutions like UCI build its capacity to effectively engage all students in science throughout their undergraduate years, especially those who come to college via non-traditional pathways.
UCI is committed to increase its infrastructure, resources, and expertise to involve undergraduate students in science. The long term goal of HHMI is to search for successful strategies pioneered by the grantee institutions to serve as models to be adapted and adopted by other institutions.
Each campus is only allowed to submit one proposal to HHMI, so the Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning has decided to gather ideas and first organize internal interest among our talented undergrads.
Rather than conducting a straight internal competition, we are going to gather ideas and interested parties to potentially collaborate on a common proposal from the UCI campus.
If you are an undergrad and have an idea that would make for a great proposal for the HHMI Inclusive Excellence Grant, we want to hear from you!
Please submit the following information to vptl@uci.edu by Friday, July 8th:
- Name, department, title, contact information
- Brief description of program ideas for the proposal (no more than 250 words)
- Your level of interest in participating in the proposal planning and preparation.
HMI plans to conduct this competition twice over the next few years, and expects to award five-year grants to a total of up to 60 institutions. The Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning is excited to see what we can collectively come up with to try be one of the schools to earn this prestigious grant.
