To mark the start of Fall Quarter 2022, the UCI ANTrepreneur Center has announced a new partnership with the UCI Law Startup and Small Business Clinic (SSBC). This collaboration will establish Legal Office Hours at the ANTrepreneur Center, where student entrepreneurs can walk in and receive free legal support for an array of legal matters associated with starting and operating a business.
About the SSBC
UCI Law established SSBC in 2018 to provide law students with the opportunity to gain real-life experience in practicing business and transactional law. Law students acting as SSBC Associates serve local entrepreneurs and business owners by helping them navigate the legal complexities of the start-up and small business world.
The SSBC is overseen by Professor Daniel J. Alexander II. Alexander is a graduate of Howard University, where he received his B.A. in international relations, and of the UCLA School of Law, where he received his J.D. Prior to becoming the Director of the SSBC in 2018, Alexander was a longtime member of UCI Law’s Dean’s Advisory Board and taught Applied Lawyering and Law Firm Management as a lecturer.
Outside of UCI, Alexander spent 12 years litigating business disputes before focusing his practice on the transactional representation of start-ups, entrepreneurs, and small businesses. Alexander currently provides legal services to nonprofits, start-ups, and small and mid-sized businesses with the goal of providing his clients with corporate legal services that replicate the methods, approach, and style of an in-house law department.
About Legal Office Hours at the ANTrepreneur Center
The partnership between the ANTrepreneur Center and the SSBC is noteworthy as it represents one of SSBC’s first cross-campus collaborations. “We have been representing clients outside of the UCI community for years,” Alexander explains. “I felt that this partnership would be a great opportunity for the SSBC to make a mark on campus and build a pipeline that empowers ANTrepreneur Center students to take advantage of the start-up legal resources that were being offered right across the street.”
Starting Week 1 of Fall Quarter 2022, students will have the opportunity to attend Legal Office Hours on Mondays from 3:00-4:00 pm and Fridays from 12:00-3:00 pm at the ANTrepreneur Center. Students will also be able to schedule one-on-one meetings with Alexander or an SSBC Associate through the ANTrepreneur Center’s CampusGroups page. Through Legal Office Hours and one-on-one legal consultations, students can receive free legal guidance, advice, and resources in the following areas:
- General Business Advice
- Business Formation
- Contract Review and Negotiation
- Non-Disclosure/Confidentiality Agreements
- Loan Agreements
- Promissory Notes
- Asset Purchase Agreements
- Equity Rights Agreements
- Commercial Leasing
- Independent Contractor and Employment Issues
- Permitting and Licensing
- Publicity Rights
- Trade Secrets
- Buy/Sell Agreements
For Ryan Foland, Director of the ANTrepreneur Center, establishing Legal Office Hours is an important step toward the goal of making the ANTrepreneur Center a fully-comprehensive campus resource for students at every stage of their entrepreneurial journeys:
“We are thrilled to work with the SSBC and expand the critical services we offer UCI’s student entrepreneurs. This partnership will allow us to provide free legal assistance and support that our students may not otherwise have access to as early-stage entrepreneurs. With trusted legal guidance at their disposal, students can feel confident knowing that they are building a solid foundation for their businesses.”
